Radon is a health risk facing millions of Americans.SCHD works collaboratively with the U.S. EPA, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (Utah DEQ), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in order to educate Americans about the dangers of radon exposure and to encourage them to take action to identify and fix radon problems.
Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon enters buildings through openings in the foundation floor or walls (sump openings, crawlspaces, floor/wall joints, cracks, etc.). Radon can become trapped in buildings, and thus, lead to elevated and harmful radon levels. Exposure to long-term, elevated radon levels can increase your risk of lung cancer. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and results in approximately 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year.
The Health Department, working with local school districts and facilities, conducted radon level tests for all school buildings in Summit County. These tests will continue on a yearly basis.
The EPA action limit for radon is 4 pCi/L or higher. If a radon test kit provides a reading of 4 pCi/L or above, it is highly recommended that a licensed radon mitigator installs a vent fan system to reduce the level of radon below the action limit. Each school in Summit County tested below the limit with the average being 0.9 pCi/L. For more information about radon, call the Summit County Health Department, 435-333-1541.
Protect your family by testing for radon in your home and help the Health Department track high areas of radon in our community. The Health Department is offering radon test kits for you to sample the air where you live. The cost for each kit is $10.00 and this includes lab analysis.
Property owners with unsafe levels of radon will be referred to state-approved Licensed Radon Mitigators. A list of Utah licensed service providers is available by clicking here or by calling (800) 269-4174.
