About Drink Different

Drink Different is a harm-reduction and responsible drinking campaign led by the Summit County Health Department Prevention Division. The initiative aims to shift local drinking culture by promoting safer choices, increasing access to non-alcoholic options, and reducing alcohol-related harm without judgment or stigma.

Rather than focusing on abstinence alone, Drink Different meets people where they are. The campaign encourages residents and visitors to make informed choices, explore non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beverages, and recognize the benefits of moderation for both personal health and community well-being.

Our Purpose

Alcohol plays a visible role in social life and tourism in Summit County. While many people drink responsibly, alcohol-related injuries, impaired driving, mental health challenges, and chronic health conditions continue to impact individuals, families, and local services.

Drink Different Was Created To:

  • Reduce alcohol-related harms
  • Normalize choosing non-alcoholic options
  • Support people who want to drink less or take breaks from alcohol
  • Strengthen partnerships between public health and local businesses
  • Promote a culture of wellness, balance, and safety

How the Campaign Works

Drink Different partners with:

  • Local bars, restaurants, and cafés
  • Community organizations
  • Healthcare and prevention providers
  • Schools and employers

Participating establishments highlight their non-alcoholic and mocktail menus, display campaign materials, and help create environments where choosing not to drink or drinking less is socially supported.

The campaign also provides educational content, community events, and digital resources focused on:

  • Safer drinking practices
  • Understanding standard drink sizes
  • Mental health and substance-use awareness
  • Alternatives to alcohol for social connection

Harm Reduction at The Center

Drink Different is grounded in harm-reduction principles, which recognize that:

  • People have different relationships with alcohol
  • Any step toward safer use is a positive step
  • Access to information and supportive environments saves lives

By offering practical tools and alternatives, the campaign empowers individuals to make choices that align with their health goals whether that means cutting back, switching to non-alcoholic drinks, or avoiding alcohol altogether.

Creating Measurable Impact

The campaign evaluates success through:

  • Participation from local businesses
  • Community engagement and awareness
  • Website traffic and educational resource use
  • Optional reporting on non-alcoholic beverage sales trends
  • Feedback from partners and residents

These metrics help guide future prevention efforts and ensure the campaign continues to meet community needs.

A Community-Driven Effort

Drink Different reflects Summit County’s commitment to:

  • Public health
  • Mental wellness
  • Injury prevention
  • Substance-use education
  • Inclusive, stigma-free support

It is one part of a broader prevention strategy focused on building healthier, safer, and more connected communities.
