Over Exercising (Compulsive Exercise)

Considering all of the benefits that come with being physically active, it is easy to think more is better.  However, there can be too much of a good thing.  When the body never has a chance to recover from workouts, it increases the risk of injury and illness, including stress fractures and heart problems.

Here are some signs that you, or someone you know, might be exercising at unhealthy levels:

  • You never take a rest day, even if you are exhausted, sick, or injured.
  • You feel guilty, anxious, or angry if you miss a day of exercise.
  • You care more about the number of calories you burn than about the way exercise makes you feel.
  • It feels like exercise has taken over your life.

Talk to your doctor if you suspect you’re over exercising.  You might need help with exploring your feelings behind the need to over exercise.
